Meet Billy Elliot: Cape Cod Repertory Theatre (Brewster, MA)

A crowd like this will be entering the 129 seat Cape Rep Theatre for BETM performances Aug 2-27, 2017.

The Indoor Theater at Cape Cod Repertory Theatre (Cape Rep) in Brewster, MA provides a very intimate setting as it hosts a regional production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM), August 2-27, 2017.

Cape Cod Repertory Theatre was founded in 1986 and, after a nomadic existence, moved to its present home in Brewster in 1992 on the grounds of what was formerly Camp Monomoy.  The camp, originally founded in 1922 by Robert J Delahanty and moved from its initial site in West Harwich to its present location in Brewster, MA in 1926, is today called the Cape Cod Sea Camps, a summer day program and overnight camp for children ages 8-17.  That entity still exists today on a portion of the property, but most of the land was taken over by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1983 and is now part of Nickerson State Park.

In 1991, Cape Rep successfully sought legislation to enable the Commonwealth to enter into a long-term lease with Cape Rep to rehabilitate several former camp buildings into a performing arts center.

Today, the main performance facility on the property is called The Indoor Theater. It was originally built in 1959 and used as a dining hall by Camp Monomoy.  After renovations, this 129-seat theater was opened by Cape Rep in 1997.

Earlier, the first restoration project on the property was the renovation of the Camp Chapel into an Outdoor Theater, Cape Cod’s only outside theater.  Everything from Shakespeare to Agatha Christie has been produced in this performance space by Cape Rep, which also presents daytime children’s shows in the facility all summer long.

Other former Camp Monomoy buildings on the property have also been restored and continue to be renovated as support structures for Cape Rep’s program.

Cape Rep produces a four to five play Indoor Theater season running May through December, and in the summer also offers professional shows for children in the Outdoor Theater.  Over the past 10 years, annual attendance has increased from 3,000 to 21,000 and season subscriptions have risen from 85 to 800.

Besides BETM, the 2017 Indoor Theater season includes Regular Singing, Men On Boats, A New Brain and Boundless.

Cape Rep has chosen a veteran Billy to lead its BETM cast.  This production is Matthew Dean‘s 5th time starring in the title role. To learn more about Matthew, click on the Billy Profiles button (below) to be taken to his detailed profile.
