    Meet Billy Elliot: Corban Foster

Note:  Corban Foster’s final show as Billy in Camelot Theatre Company’s production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) in Talent, Oregon, was on Oct 12, 2019.

Debut:  September 18, 2019 (Talent, OR)

Total Performances as Billy:  9 (No partial shows)

Corban Foster was 13 years old (D.O.B. = 20-Jul-2006) when he made his debut as Billy in Camelot Theatre Company’s production of BETM in Talent, Oregon.  Corban is in the 7th grade at North Middle School.

Corban’s dance training began when he was five years old at Stillpoint Dance Studio in Grants Pass, OR.  For three summers he has also attended Young Musicians and Artists camp, which is held at Willamette University in Salem, OR.  Corban also began acting training at age five with regular acting classes and camps through the local YMCA.  More recently he has gone on to add tumbling and gymnastics to his repertoire — he started taking classes in these disciplines two years ago at Motion Matrix in Grants Pass.

Although Billy Elliot will be Corban’s first major role in a musical, he is certainly no stranger to the stage.  His first theatrical performance was in the Nutcracker ballet when he was six years old and he has never looked back.  Since then Corban has performed in over 50 productions, including two years as Fritz in the Nutcracker — a remarkable feat for a 13-year-old!

Corban’s mother was contacted by the Assistant Stage Manager of Camelot Theatre Company’s production of BETM, who is a longtime friend, to let her know about the production and that they were holding auditions for the role of Billy.  Corban and his younger brother, Eli, went to Camelot for a privately scheduled audition time, and were both offered the lead role on the spot!

Choreography rehearsals started in April with the show’s choreographer, Melanie Marie, who will also be playing Mrs Wilkinson.  The two brothers rehearsed every weekend through the summer.  They then joined the rest of the cast about 8 weeks before opening night for rehearsals 5-6 evenings a week.

When Corban performed as Billy at the first preview performance of the Camelot production on 18-Sep-2019 he became the 279th actor worldwide to play the role in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
