Total Performances as Billy: 9
Lucas Johnson was 12 years old (born March 17, 2014) when he was cast to make his community theatre debut in the title role of Billy at the Koorliny Arts Centre. He is a student at Aquinas College, a school for boys in Salter Point, Perth.
Though he is making his community theatre debut with this production, Lucas is no stranger to the stage. He has performed in several Aquinas productions, including the roles of JoJo in Seussical Jr., SpongeBob in SpongeBob the Musical Jr., and Marlin in Finding Nemo Jr.
In addition to his love of theatre, Lucas is a truly well-rounded young man. He competes in tennis, athletics, and hockey. At Aquinas, he is a member of the unique and highly regarded Schola Cantorum, a choir of 52 choristers. Along with school appearances, the choir performs regularly at St. Patrick’s Basilica in Fremantle, with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and with Breaksea.
While Lucas’s previous experience has been primarily as a singer and actor, production director Rp van der Westhuizen notes that with the guidance of the Koorliny creative team, Lucas’s raw dancing abilities and natural stage presence have flourished during the BETM rehearsals. In this promotional video, taken in the days before the show opened, the reader can get a feel for Lucas’s dancing abilities.
Lucas is excited to bring the character of Billy Elliot to life on stage. He will become the 387th performer to do so in a professional, regional, or community theatre production of the musical since its beginning in London in 2005.
