 The first touring production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) anywhere in the world opened in Chicago in previews on March 18, 2010. This original tour, which was designed for extended stays in some of the largest cities in North America, continued in Chicago until November 28, 2010, closing after 285 shows over almost nine months.

Now no longer considered a touring production, the show re-opened in previews with essentially the same cast as a “stand alone” production in Toronto for an open-ended run at the Canon Theatre, on February 1, 2011, for a month of previews. The official Opening Night of the show was March 1, 2011 which was attended by Sir Elton John who wrote the score for the show, and by Executive Producer David Furnish. The show had its final performance in Toronto on September 3, 2011.
