Amelia Community Theatre (ACT) presents 11 performances of a production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM) February 9-25, 2024 in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Fernandina Beach is a community of about 13,000 located just north of Jacksonville, Florida.

ACT was chartered in 1981 as a nonprofit organization. Over the past 42+ years ACT has produced more than 300 shows for adults and children and remains a successful, volunteer-based, nonprofit organization. A sampling of some of those productions includes such popular shows as Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun, The Fantasticks, The Sound of Music and A Christmas Carol.  To see a complete listing of all past productions, go here.

For the first 10 years of its existence, most of ACT’s performances were presented in the Fernandina Beach High School auditorium, which is now the middle school. The school auditorium and several other local buildings served as performance spaces until ACT purchased a vacant school board building in 1988, which became ACT’s first permanent home and is now named Studio 209. The Studio 209 theatre building was quickly drawing near-capacity audiences for every performance. In 2004, a capital campaign was launched to raise funds for a new performance space to be built on ACT-owned property adjacent to Studio 209.

Fundraising was successful and in April 2010, the beautiful 7,500 sq. ft. building called the Main Stage, with an auditorium capacity of 170 seats, welcomed patrons to watch the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance. The Main Stage now holds up to 186 patrons. In 2020, capabilities for creating professional quality video broadcasts were added. 

Besides BETM, the 2023-2024 season at ACT is featuring five other shows:

  • Over the River and Through the Woods (Oct 6-21, 2023)
  • Miracle on 34th Street (Dec 1-16, 2023)
  • Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Apr 12-27, 2024)
  • First Date (Jun 7-22, 2024)
  • The Mousetrap (Aug 9-24, 2024)

Billy Elliot The Musical

Auditions for BETM were held in November, 2023. Rehearsals began shortly after and progressed right up until the opening night on February 9, 2024.  A cast of 28 is being led by a female performer in the role of Billy for only the second time in the history of the stage show in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical since it first opened in London in 2005. Her name is Julia Taylor.
