Christian Bakke De Mello was 12 years old when he debuted in the title role in Billy Elliot The Musical at The National Theatre.
Prior to auditioning for BETM, Christian had never done any ballet before. “People don’t understand how difficult it is. There is a lot of work involved”, he explains.
Since finding out that he got the role, Christian has been working very hard over the last year to learn to dance, and to improve his acting and singing. Christian says that his schoolmates don’t fully understand what he has spent the last weeks and months on. “I play basketball, but there is not much basketball now,” he says. So his friends ask: “Why are you dropping basketball to do ballet?”
With his debut performance on 27-Jan-2024, Christian becomes the 348th young actor worldwide to play the role of Billy in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
