Franco (Fran)Leone Malozaj is 16 years old, the eldest of the five boys selected to play Billy. He’s described as “coming from the world of dance” as opposed to musical theatre and is strongly oriented to classical ballet. Fran’s primary dance instruction has come at the Fundación Julio Bocca. His dance background was viewed as the strongest among the five boys selected to play Billy.
Fran is a big fan of Tini and has been since he was very little. He says that’s mostly because of Violetta. He adds: “I really enjoy listen to her; I follow her work, and I’ve been to her concerts.”
Franco began dancing at 4-5 years old and has never stopped. He says that “Billy Elliot opened the door to singing” for him.
Fran says he found out about the auditions for BETM when his dance teacher sent him the official Instagram post. He decided to try it but says he didn’t have much faith that he’d be selected as his performing background was almost entirely in dance. Fran said he experienced finding out he had been selected as one of the Billys in a way that was different from the others. He says “I was away, traveling in Córdoba. So that day they called me and I saw that there was a lot of celebrating going on, but I didn’t quite understand why until they said ‘Welcome to Billy Elliot!’ and that’s when it finally hit me. I was incredibly excited; honestly I just couldn’t believe it.”
Franco states that his desire is to “travel, train abroad and dance many ballets”, underlining that his long-term ambition is as a ballet dancer rather than only musical theatre. He wants to train in dance abroad “and perform in lots of ballets”.
Upon his debut as Billy, Franco becomes the 396th performer to portray Billy Elliot on stage in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
