Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) was first presented by Lillestrøm Folketeater at Lillestrøm Kultursenter from August 26 to September 5, 2021. The Lillestrøm production returns in 2022 for six more performances from April 2 to 9.
The country of Norway was no stranger to BETM, having hosted two successful previous productions — Oslo in 2014/15 and Sandnes in 2018. The Lillestrøm production was the first time that an amateur Norwegian theatre company had presented the musical.
Lillestrøm Folketeater is a relatively new theatre organization, having only been founded in February 2018. The initiative to start a new organization was taken by Magnus Landaas Skjervold, who is now the chairman of the board. BETM was one of the company’s first major productions.
Originally planned for March 2021, the production faced many delays due to the pandemic. Rehearsals started in August 2020, with a planned 6 months set aside to get the show ready for opening night. However, after only two months, the rise in the number of infections in Norway forced them to scale back. Only Alexander Gløtta (Billy) was able to attend in-person rehearsals, and the rest of the cast had to make do with learning their lines, singing and dancing at home.
The production was delayed from March to June and it was finally pushed back again to August. Full cast rehearsals were allowed once again from May, and the cast worked hard since then.
In May 2021, the production released this video of the cast singing Once We Were Kings:
