Meet Billy Elliot: Oslo, Norway

Folketeateret Interior2On 18-Sep-2014, at the Folketeatret (People’s Theatre) in Oslo, Norway, a new production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM) began performances. It was the first production of the show in Europe, outside of England, and just the second in the world to be presented in a language other than English (South Korea being the first non English production of the show, presented in 2010/2011). The show ran until 22-Feb-2015 for a total of 56 performances.

The Folketeatret building in Oslo was commissioned in 1929 and opened in 1935 as a movie theater. The first theatrical performance occurred in 1952. From 1959 to 2008 the building was shared with the Norwegian National Opera.

The theater was acquired by Eiendomsspar AS in 2006, which conducted an extensive restoration. The theater reopened in 2009 and has, since then, been home to an array of theatrical performances as well television productions and other major events.
