SäffleOperan in Säffle, Sweden will present a production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) at Medborgarhuset Säffle from October 2 to December 4, 2021. They are the first semi-professional theatre company in Sweden to mount a production of BETM, following on from the highly acclaimed professional production that was performed in Malmö and Stockholm in 2016-17. SäffleOperan were originally due to present BETM in autumn 2020, but it was delayed by a year due to the pandemic.
SäffleOperan is located in western Värmland, by the banks of the Byälven river. They have produced a wide range of plays and musicals for their local community since being founded in 1974. As a semi-professional company, amateur performers are given the opportunity to work alongside professionals.
The search to find the young performers for the SäffleOperan production of BETM began in late 2019. From November 2019 to March 2020 the theatre company held a series of workshops for children interested in starring in the show — these included classes on singing, dancing and acting. After four months of workshops SäffleOperan had found their Billys, Michaels and the rest of the children’s ensemble. Sharing the lead role of Billy will be two young performers — Bruno Fovaeus and Paul Sprengel.
