It has been almost two months since the Korean production of Billy Elliot the Musical opened in Seoul, South Korea on August 13, 2010. Before the opening, there had been concern over finding boys capable of playing the grueling role of Billy in South Korea, where there are few boys who have dancing experience. However, the four Korean Billys: Se-yong Kim(13), Ji-myung Lee(13), Jin-ho Jung(12), and Sunu Lim(10) have dispelled such worries — getting rave reviews from critics. Chosun Ilbo (one of South Korea’s major newspapers) said, “The dance became a poem.” 10 Asia (a website for culture in general) also praised the show saying “Whatever you expect from musicals, you would see more than that in Billy Elliot the Musical.” And musical critic Yong-shin Cho commented about the show saying, “It is the deep awe of actors on stage that completes the great show. The Korean Billys inspire the awe in us.”
뮤지컬 빌리엘리어트의 한국 프로덕션이 8월 13일 개막한 이후 약 두달이 지났다. 춤추는 남자아이들이 드문 한국에서 빌리의 역할을 소화할 수 있는 소년들을 찾을 수 있을지에 대해 우려가 있었지만 네명의 한국빌리들, 김세용(13), 이지명(13),정진호(12),임선우(10)는 평단의 극찬을 받으며 그러한 우려를 불식시켔다. 한국 주요일간지 중 하나인 조선일보는 “춤이 시가 되었다.”고 평했고,문화웹싸이트 텐아시아에서는 “뮤지컬에 대해 무엇을 기대하든 그 이상을 보게 될 것이다.”라고 극찬했다. 또한 뮤지컬 평론가 조용신씨도 “명품 무대를 완성하는 것은 배우에 대한 경외심. 한국 빌리들은 그것을 보여준다.”라고 평했다.
The reaction from audiences has also been positive. Getting very strong publicity by word of mouth, Billy Elliot the Musical tops the chart of reservation purchases for theatre at Interpark (the major online theatre reservation website). As was stated in one audience review, “There might be a person who hasn’t seen the show, but there is no person who has seen it only once!” Not only is the show getting great reviews from the audience, in general, but also ‘Billy Maniacs’ are being formed.
관객들의 반응도 긍정적이다. 입소문을 타고 뮤지컬 빌리엘리어트는 주요 공연예매 싸이트 중 하나인 인터파크 차트 1위에 올랐다. 또한 “공연을 아직 한번도 못본 사람은 있어도 한번만 본 사람은 없다!”라는 관객 리뷰처럼 일반관객의 호의적 반응을 넘어서 ‘빌리 매니아’층까지 형성되고 있다.
As for the concerns of how the show would do in a non-English language, the Korean production did a very successful job of translating into Korean and has maintained the humor of the show. Instead of using dialects, a different level of sophistication of languages is being used to reflect different classes of British society. The creative team also found a way to translate the humor by playing with Korean words and word spacing. In addition, they keep adjusting some lines and details of the show to deliver them to the audience more effectively.
영어가 아닌 언어로 공연을 올리는 측면에서 보았을때,한국 프로덕션은 영국북부지방 사투리와 유머를 번역해내는데 상당한 성공을 거두었다. 사투리를 쓰는 대신에 사용하는 언어 수준의 세련도에 차이를 둠으로써 영국 사회의 계급 차이를 반영했다. 또한 한국말의 언어유희 및 띄어쓰기 등을 이용하여 적절히 유머를 살려냈다. 그리고 좀더 극을 관객들에게 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 지속적으로 대사와 디테일들을 조정하고 있다.
A Farewell to the Foreign Creative Team

In late August, the Korean cast bid farewell to the foreign creative team staff, with whom they had been rehearsing for over four months. It was a very emotional day for all the staff and cast, with a lot of tears. It was harder to say good-bye for the Billys, in particular, who had spent the most time with them.
8월 말 한국 스탭들과 캐스트들은 4달이 넘게 동고동락하며 리허설을 함께 해온 해외 크리에이티브팀과 작별을 나누었다. 모든 스탭들과 캐스트들이 눈물바다가 된 특별한 날이었다. 특히 이들과 함께 가장 많은 시간을 보냈던 빌리들에게는 작별인사를 하는 것이 더욱이 힘들었을 것이다.
A Day in the Life of the Billys
빌리들의 일상
As there is no established tutoring/home schooling system in Korea, all the Billys have to attend their regular schools, at least part of the time. On Mondays, when the theatre goes dark, they attend their school full-time. From Tuesday to Friday, when they have the show, the boys come to the theatre after taking classes in the morning. Therefore, it is a very hectic schedule for them doing shows, while at the same time keeping up with their school schedule.
한국에는 튜터링이나 홈스쿨과 같은 시스템이 확립되어있지 않기 때문에,모든 빌리들은 적어도 부분적으로나마 학교 수업을 듣고 와야한다. 공연이 없는 월요일에는 학교 수업을 모두 듣고 공연이 있는 화요일부터 금요일에는 오전수업을 듣고 극장으로 온다. 따라서 이들은 공연을 하면서 학교 스케쥴도 따라잡아야 하는 바쁜 일정을 소화하고 있다.

1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Acrobatic/Ballet Training
오후 한시-세시: 아크로/발레연습
After attending school in the morning, the Billys are the first members of the cast to arrive at the LG Arts Center for their training. From 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM, they take an acrobatic class and from 2:00PM to 3:00 PM, they practice their ballet.
오전 수업을 들은 후 빌리들은 훈련을 위해 LG아트센터에 가장 먼저 출근한다. 오후 한시부터 한시 오십분까지는 아크로 수업을, 두시부터 세시까지는 발레수업을 듣는다.

오후 세시-다섯시: 빌리들의 자유시간
After the training, the Billy who is scheduled for additional training, such as acting or singing, goes to the rehearsal room while the other Billys have a bit of free time to have snacks, relax and hang out.
연습이 끝난후, 연기와 같은 별도의 특별연습이 있는 빌리는 다시 리허설 룸으로 들어가고 다른 빌리들은 간식을 먹거나 휴식을 취하고 서로 어울리며 노는 자유시간을 갖는다.

Three Billys — the one who is doing the show, the standby and the standby for the standby – have dinner and the 4th Billy gets to go home. It’s around the time when other cast members arrive at the theatre.
3명의 빌리들(쇼빌리,대기 빌리,대대기 빌리)는 저녁을 먹고 나머지 빌리는 집으로 돌아간다. 이 무렵 다른 캐스트 멤버들도 극장에 출근하기 시작한다.
