Atlantic Light Theatre presented a regional production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) at the St John’s Arts and Culture Centre in Newfoundland from February 2-5, 2017.
Atlantic Light Theatre was founded by Doug Vaughan and Jacinta Mackey-Graham in order to create performance opportunities for the local talent in the province. Their first production was Les Miserables in 2014, and it had a hugely successful sell-out run. Since then Atlantic Light Theatre has gone from strength to strength, performing two more large scale musicals – Spamalot and Sister Act.
BETM was Atlantic Light Theatre’s fourth major production. One of the reasons it was chosen as their 2017 production was that the themes of the story would resonate with a Newfoundland audience, as mining is one of the biggest industries in the province.
Preparations for the show began way back in June 2016 when they cast their Billy – Jack Thistle. He was in intensive rehearsals for the show ever since then, all the way up to opening night.
