The Julia Morgan Theater in Berkeley, California, played host to a production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM) from Feb 16 to Mar 25, 2017. The theater, home to Berkeley Playhouse, was built in 1910 and is considered by many to be a community treasure. The 328-seat theatre provides an intimate space for patrons of shows there that feels like “home.”
Berkeley Playhouse was founded in 2007 by Artistic Director, Elizabeth McKoy, a professional theatre actor, director, and teacher for over 20 years. Each year, the Playhouse offers a professional Main Stage season. In addition to BETM, this year’s offerings include Peter and the Starcatcher, Disney’s Beauty & the Beast, Urinetown The Musical, and Tarzan.
Berkeley Playhouse also offers educational programs. Classes, camps and performance training is provided in acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre. Children in the programs receive training from the best Bay Area teaching artists – many of them directors or performers in the Main Stage shows.
The Berkeley Playhouse production of BETM will star a pair of seasoned veterans in the title role of Billy. They are Matthew Dean and Parker James Fullmore. Between them, they have performed the role 71 times prior to the opening of the Berkeley Playhouse production.
