Diego Sánchez was 10 years old (D.O.B. = 17-May-2007) when he debuted as Billy in the Mexican production of BETM in Mexico City. He is from Puebla, which is a city southeast of Mexico City.
Diego first auditioned for BETM in February 2016, and was chosen to start training at the Billy Elliot Academy that had been set up to train potential Billys in Mexico. There Diego was taught ballet, tap, acrobatics, singing and acting.
Diego was not cast as one of the original Mexican Billys, though he was cast as one of two young actors to share the role of Small Boy. Whilst playing Small Boy, Diego continued with his Billy training in the hope that he may be able to play the role later in the production’s run. In November 2017 it was announced that Diego had achieved his goal and would soon make his debut in the title role.
With his debut performance as Billy in Mexico City on 2-Dec-2017 Diego became the 233th actor worldwide to play the role in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
