Robin Asukas was 13 years old (D.O.B = 25-Aug-2004) when he debuted as Billy in the Finnish production of Billy Elliot the Musical in Vaasa.
In order to take on the role of Billy, Robin has swapped his football boots for ballet shoes. Before his audition Robin had no previous dance training, and so has found learning ballet the hardest of the many skills he has had to acquire over the past year.
One of the most challenging aspects of the rehearsal period for Robin has been balancing school with his training and rehearsals, as he often had to be at school at 8am and was then rehearsing late into the evening.
As he has learned ballet, Robin has found a greater appreciation for the art form. He says that he now realises that it is not just a sport for girls, and that it is actually very physical and difficult.
Robin’s debut as Billy on 16-Sep-2017 makes him the 217th actor to play this demanding role in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
