YES Theatre in Sudbury, ON, present a Canadian regional production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM), originally scheduled to run from August 4-20, 2017 at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Due to overwhelming popularity, five extra shows have been added with a new end date of August 26.
YES Theatre was founded in 2009 by Alessandro Costantini, who was just 17 years old at the time. He is also the theatre company’s artistic director and has starred in many of their productions. Over the past eight seasons YES Theatre has produced a series of large musicals, featuring casts mostly made up of local Sudbury talent. Previous productions include Hair, Rent, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, and Hairspray.
BETM is the latest in this line of large musicals to be presented by YES Theatre. It is a show that is particularly special to Costantini as the original 2001 film Billy Elliot was one of the things that inspired him to pursue a career in acting and performing. The show also has many parallels with Sudbury. Both Easington (the town where the musical is set) and Sudbury are northern mining towns, and the Inco mining strike in the 1970s in Sudbury was the largest labor strike until the mining strike in the north of England, which is the backdrop of BETM.
A group of over 50 artists have come together to create this production. They will be led by Darshan Geer in the lead role of Billy Elliot.
