Joey Dean was 12 years old (D.O.B. = 24-Mar-2007) upon his debut as Billy Elliot in the Woodminster Summer Musicals production of BETM.
Joey is from Blossom Valley, which is a neighborhood of San Jose, California, in Santa Clara County. He lives there with his mom (Kit) and dad (Joe), and his brothers Johnny and Matt. He is a middle school student at Holy Spirit School where he recently completed the 6th grade.
Joey’s dance training has come via the South Bay Dance Center, a facility owned and operated by his mom, Kit Ashleigh-Dean.
Prior stage experience has included two stints in productions of Disney’s Newsies!, first playing Les and joining brother Matthew in Phoenix Theatre’s production (Phoenix, AZ) in 2017. Then, just recently in July of 2019, he was a member of the Ensemble in the Woodminster Summer Musicals production of the Disney show.
While this production of BETM marks Joey’s first time playing the title role of Billy, the Dean family is certainly no stranger to the musical. Older brother Matthew played Billy in five different regional productions of the show and Joey can use him as a sounding board and for guidance about the role, if necessary.
With his debut as Billy, Joey becomes the 274th boy to bring the title role to life in a professional, regional or community theatre production of the musical.
