Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) returned to South Korea 11 years after it was first seen on stage in Seoul in 2010. BETM was previously revived there in 2017/18 by the Seensee Company at the D-Cube Arts Center, and it then returned to the same venue for performances between August 31, 2021 and February 13, 2022.
Many of the adult cast from the 2017/18 production reprised their roles for the 2021/22 production. The Associate Director for this production was Simon Pollard, who had previously worked on the show in London and in Seoul in 2017.
The search to find the third generation of Korean Billys began in February 2020, when 161 young hopefuls turned up for the first audition. After two rounds of auditions, the final seven candidates were chosen, and then the hard work really began. Over the next year these seven young boys attended Billy School five days a week from 3pm to 9pm — there they took Pilates classes to improve physical fitness, alongside singing, acting and multiple forms of dance.
After almost a year of training, the final audition for the role of Billy was held on January 28, 2021. And then on April 21, 2021 the four chosen Billys were announced — Kang-hyuk Jeon, Hyun-jun Joo, Si-hun Kim and Woo-jin Lee.
The following video shows the four Billys being interviewed about getting the role of Billy and looking forward to performing the show on stage for the first time:
