A production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM) took place at the 1511 seat Malmö Opera House in Malmö, Sweden from February 13 to June 3, 2016, mainly on weekends.  During that time frame, the show was presented 41 times.  Three Billys, all new to the role, led the cast.  They are Jacob HermanssonOliver Lohk, and Grim Lohman.

Approximately 80 boys auditioned for the roles of Billy and Michael.  The best of them, 16 in all, began attending a “Billy Elliot school” established at Base 23 in Stockholm (Stockholm Dance Academy)

In the Spring of 2015, to celebrate Base 23’s fifth anniversary, some of the Billy School attendees danced to choreography from BETM Sweden at Stockholm’s Oscarsteatern (the best-known musical theatre in Sweden). Here’s a video of their performance:

Eventually the months of training at Base 23 whittled the number down to just six boys — three Billys and three Michaels.  From the spring of 2015 onwards, they practiced tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, acrobatics and singing at the Billy Elliot school.

This promotional video was made during the early days of training for the six Billys and Michaels as they trained in the year leading up to the show opening:

Later, the Billys and Michaels met the rest of the cast and rehearsals began in earnest to prepare the show for its mid-February opening.

The week the show opened in February 2016, this promotional video began appearing on Swedish TV.  It features Grim Lohman as Billy:

Following on from the very successful Swedish production of Billy Elliot the Musical (BETM) in Malmö in 2016, a second production of BETM was presented in Sweden in 2017, this time in the capital city of Stockholm.  This production was held at the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Stockholm (Stockholm City Theatre) and ran from February 9 to November 22, 2017, with the official opening night on February 10.  There was a summer break from June 11, with shows resuming on August 19.

In August 2016 some of the boys who were going to appear in BETM in Stockholm performed Express Yourself at an event to promote the upcoming production.  Here is a video of this performance:

Although much of the adult cast for the Stockholm production are different from the Malmö cast, many members of the Malmö child cast performed in Stockholm for the shows before the summer break:

    • Jacob Hermansson continued in the role of Billy.
    • David Fridholm and Carl Sjögren both played Michael in Malmö and went on to play Billy in Stockholm.
    • Uno Elger continued in the role of Michael.
    • Grim Lohman played Tall Boy in Stockholm, having previously played Billy in Malmö.
    • Oliver Palm was Small Boy in Malmö and went on to play Michael in Stockholm.

After the summer break there were a few cast changes among the child cast:

    • David Fridholm continues as Billy.
    • Oliver Palm and Adrian Macéus will play Billy, both having played Michael before the summer break.
    • John Österlund played Small Boy before the break and will now play Michael.
    • Lowe Bjurman played Posh Boy before the break and will now play Michael.

This trailer for the Stockholm production was released in the days leading up to the show opening, featuring footage of all three original Stockholm Billys:
