Stage Right! Theatre Company of Greensburg, PA, presented a regional production of Billy Elliot The Musical (BETM) at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, from November 18-20, 2016.
Stage Right! Theatre Company presents five professional productions per season as well as three full-length Student Company productions. In addition, since 1998 an important component of the organization has been its School for the Performing Arts, with a current enrollment of 180 students, aged 4-18, year round. The school is based on the tenet that professional artists instructing, mentoring and working alongside student actors profoundly affects their development. The students are taught by professionals and are then given the opportunity to work with them on stage.
The 2016 season included West Side Story, Rock of Ages and Tink!, the latter an orginal musical written by Stage Right! Artistic Director Anthony Marino.
The Palace Theatre in downtown Greensburg opened on September 2, 1926, as the Manos Theatre, offering a mix of vaudeville, silent motion pictures and road shows. Only venues in larger cities could match the elegance of the Manos Theatre. Its French Renaissance design boasted a golden Grecian marble balustrade, a trim, elegant Vermont marble staircase, brass railings, colorful murals, black and white checkerboard tile floors, wrought copper and iron hanging baskets for flowers, and a flowing fountain with live goldfish.
The Westmoreland Cultural Trust, which now manages the theater, has spearheaded more than $12 million in Palace renovations since 1990. With the renovations, much of the original Manos Theatre remains intact, but the organization’s renovation efforts continue.
Stage Right’s production of BETM is the latest large scale musical to be produced there. Other recent productions, just to name a few, have included Rock of Ages (2016), A Charlie Brown Christmas (2015) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (2015).
In the days before BETM’s opening at the Palace Theatre, Artistic Director Marino talked about the show, captured in this video clip:
The cast assembled for this production is the largest ever for a production of BETM, with 76 cast members. They are led by veteran Broadway actor George Dvorsky in the role of Billy’s father, Jackie Elliot, and by a young man debuting in the title role in this production, Anthony Maxmilian Marino.
